What do I need to know about a Montessori preschool? My first day as the new Director of Education for a Montessori preschool in Orlando Florida I was introduced to the concept of “learn with purpose”. Purpose is defined as “a definite action in order to achieve a definite end; to work”. In this case, the end we are striving for is learning. We are working to educate our students in the knowledge of how to live their lives. They are learning about what it means to be human. Visit thejupiterschool.com for more information.

What do I need to know about a Montessori preschool in education, then, is that in this system children are being educated with a lesson in a purpose. They are being brought up to understand that there is a purpose to every activity they do and that this purpose calls forth an appropriate action. In the Orlando school system this often means finding out what your child enjoys doing and getting them into extracurricular activities which fit that interest. This then becomes a great way for them to learn more about themselves and become increasingly competent human beings.

What do I need to know about a Montessori preschool in education, then, is that this education model is far different from most in the country. Many of our public preschools essentially function as second homes for our children. The Montessori education system instead places education as the core activity of the day. This allows students to focus on the basics of learning, such as reading and writing letters and numbers. The emphasis on building a core curriculum that encompasses learning the basics supports and promotes a strong foundation for Montessori education.

What do I need to know about a Montessori preschool in education, then, is that when my students leave the preschool they have built a strong foundation for themselves. They are well-schooled individuals who love and have a deep respect for the educational process. They can read, write, count, identify colors and numbers, and follow lessons at any age level. They can demonstrate their intelligence and creativity in math, science, and art.

What do I need to know about a Montessori preschool in education, then, is that this education method promotes a strong sense of individualism. A Montessori education does not attempt to mold minds to conform to rigid templates or cookie-cutter lessons. Instead, the Montessori education system encourages students to be self-determined, unique individuals who respect and nurture their natural strengths. It provides them with the self-confidence that comes from growing up with a set of values and habits that are distinct and unique. Learning at home in a Montessori preschool also fosters social and interpersonal dynamics that translate effectively in the real world.

In sum, what do I need to know about a Montessori education? It promotes the discovery of individual learning, curiosity, and ingenuity. It is an approach to education that emphasizes the development of intrinsic rather than extrinsic learning in young children.
