The Singapore Math program makes use of 3 step learning model that includes concrete [C] to pictorial [P] to abstract [A] or the CPA approach. The method aligns with Common Core Standards. Sequential learning helps students grow without feeling burdened or confused, especially those kids who changed schools.

Singapore Math differs because it is not rote memorization but is philosophy. The agenda of Singapore Math is around learning problem-solving as well as develop mathematical thinking essential for success in math. Students need a solid foundation to solve complicated math problems. The elementary students do learn simplistic skills, but they need to spend time mastering problem-solving skills.

Singapore Math covers students in Pre-K to 8th grade. E Singapore Math offers high-quality instruction and resources embedded in modern instructional technology. This motivates young kids to attain their true potential. The program can be applied in every setting. For example, if your child is in 5th grade and needs to catch up you can check their website and everything about this grade.

    Pros of Singapore Math

    • It supports the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
    • It asks students to identify meaning and learn the concepts and skills rather than rote memorizing of formulas and rules.
    • Only a few topics are covered in a year, but in a detailed manner to ensure that students gain a solid foundation without the need to relearn the concept as they move forward.
    • Workbooks and textbooks have clear and crisp graphics that are easy to read.
    • Textbooks are chronological and built on previously learned skills and concepts. This offers to learn to progress without a need to relearn.

    Cons of Singapore Math

    • It supports the Common Core State Standards Initiative. {This can be a disadvantage for some}
    • It is not workable for nomadic students [move in & out of school districts]. If the math program is similar there is no issue. Nevertheless, Singapore Math is chronological and does not reteach the skills or concepts, so nomadic students can potentially fail.
    • Less focus is on mathematics when compared to the traditional US Math Textbook. The approach is more ideological and conceptual.
    • It needs wide-ranging and continuing teacher training that is not financially and practically viable in several school districts or homeschooled kids.
    • Supplies are expendable, so every classroom will need to reorder supplies annually. This is a financial burden to already stressed school and homeschooling budgets.

    How Singapore Math is taught?

Singapore Math takes the CPA approach, which helps children understand math using their current knowledge. What is CPA approach? – It is a 3-phase program that includes –

    1. C or Concrete phase – Students are encouraged to work together with physical objects and solve the problems.
    2. P or Pictorial phase – Students are taught to connect mentally with their visually represented objects.
    3. A or Abstract – Students are guided to use math symbols and numbers.

Critical mathematical thinking abilities will help students to transit to nearly any type of math syllabus after learning Singapore Math.
