IBPS PO is one of the prestigious job profiles in the country. Not only are the probationary officers respected, but they also earn a high salary, thanks to the impressive IBPS PO pay scale. If you’re attempting the PO examination conducted by the IBPS, you must be curious about the growth profile.

There are many higher positions you can occupy within the bank. Even by working as a PO, you’ll receive increments on your salary three times. So, there’s growth nevertheless. In this article, you’ll learn about the growth profile if you qualify for IBPS PO.

After Clearing the Exam

After you clear the Prelims and Mains examination, you’ll be allocated to one of the participating banks based on your ranks and preference.

You’ll then engage in a training period with the bank in which you’ll learn all about the basics of working as a Probationary Officer. It will last somewhere between 3-7 weeks, after which you’ll start working as a PO.

You can work in the same position your entire tenure. During this period, you’ll receive increments three times in your career, and your basic salary will become around 40,000 and gross around 60,000. Or else you can move up the hierarchy ladder.

Assistant Manager

The first promotion you’ll receive is to an Assistant Manager. You’ll be promoted after two years working as a PO. You’re hired as an Assistant Manager, but you undergo training for your first two years and are on probation, hence called a probationary officer. After working for two years in at least three different branches, you’ll be allowed to work as an Assistant Manager.

Senior Manager or Branch Manager

You may appear for the examination and apply for the post of Senior Manager in the bank, also referred to as the branch manager. These are called Scale-IV positions. Experience of 5-7 years of serving as a PO is required to apply for the post. Some banks may also demand an MBA as a qualification.

Chief Manager

Next in the hierarchical order is a Chief Manager. You’ll be taking care of bigger banks and branches, generally the head branch in the city. Senior Managers will be reporting to you daily. An experience of 5-6 years working as a branch manager in one of the eligibility criteria.

Assistant General Manager

AGMs are required to take care of a cluster of branches within a region. They are highly experienced and earn a correspondingly high salary. The post is of Scale V. There are many exams he or she needs to attend. The promotion also depends on the skill sets and performance over the years.

Deputy General Manager

A DGM is a top executive within a bank and handles a zone covering several regions. It takes around 15 years of work experience to become a DGM. It depends on performance, ability, and managing capabilities.

General Manager

A General Manager or GM is part of the senior management team at the headquarters. They formulate policies for governing the bank and take multiple profiles and roles. The experience required is 20-25 years in the banking sector. It is known as a Scale VII position.

There are also higher positions to which you can get promoted. There’s ED or Executive Director and CMD or Chairman and Managing Director. So there’s a lot of scope for growth as a PO. As the IBPS PO pay scale improves, there will be more candidates applying for the same positions.
