Orthodontics is a popular subject in dental medicine, which deals with dental alignment and shaping upper and lower jaw to get the perfect bite. It is one of the renounced dental surgery courses offered in different government and private colleges. You become an orthodontist after your higher secondary education or after having your bachelor’s degree in dentistry. Some colleges also offer diploma courses in orthodontics and online modules.

    Orthodontics After Higher Secondary

This is one of the undergraduate Orthodontic Courses offered in many dentistry colleges. You can apply for them after clearing your NEET UG exam. To apply for orthodontics in UG, you need to have 60 percent marks in your higher secondary examination and also need to score sufficient marks in your NEET Exam.

This course has a span of 4 years and divided into 8 semesters. After ending your last semester, you need to complete your internship which is for 1 year. In these 4 years, you will be taught about the different reasons for dental misalignment, like- protruding tooth, crowded tooth, etc. You will be taught about different diagnostic techniques, dental materials, and treatment modalities, like braces, anchors, etc.

These Ortho courses can cost you about 50000 to 12 lacs depending on your college’s fee structure. After passing the course you can land a job in any Dental hospital, teaching colleges or, you can start your dental clinic.

    Orthodontics After BDS

You can also apply for this orthodontic course after finishing your UG course in basic dentistry.

To Apply for Orthodontics PG Degree:

    • You need to have a UG degree in dental medicine
    • Complete your 1-year compulsory internship
    • After that, you can give the entrance exam to get a seat in the orthodontics discipline.
    • Your admission will be solely based on your merit and how well you perform in the entrance exam.

This a post-graduation degree that consists of three exams and one essay after completing the 3-year course. Here, you will also learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of tooth and then about the malformations and how to diagnose and treat them. These courses can be expensive and cost you about 10 -25 lacs.

To be an orthodontist, you need to have determination and a sharp mind. You need to overlook the disturbing sight of many dental diseases while treating them and to be careless about the bad smell you will get. So, it is not an easy job, but a prestigious one nonetheless.
